A good turnout for the April Kayuba Meeting

Was nice to see more than a few Kayubers show up for this months meeting.. Jena Sansgaard, from the FDEP Coral Reef Program came up to do a presentation for the club. It was a great presentation, and dialog between the Club members present.

Water Way cleanup at the Bonnet House

Not sure if anyone else got some pictures.. will post them if you have them… I took a few.. of course of my girls – who I was proud of for coming out with me and buddy Drew to meet up with the Kayuba group, and a few walk-ins to help cleanup the mangroves and intracoastal by the Bonnet House.

Always lots of wood to haul out.

A sad day for the Kayuba club – Goodbye Odie!

I’m sad to communicate that Official Kayuber and Chris and Jim’s dog “Odie” is no longer with us. What a great dog, who has probably seen more of the world than most of us ever will. Thoughts go out!

Blue Springs State Park

Just posting as I had the pleasure of visiting Blue Springs state park yesterday. Manatees go here during certain parts of the year due to its constant temperature, in the mid 70s. There’s a spring up stream that provides the water that goes into the St. Johns River. Theres a place where swimmers and Scuba Divers can get in.. but only in off seasons when Manatees aren’t there.. Still , for Scuba Divers there’s the spring you can descend. A gradual slope to 130 feet, and then drops deep

Nice to do a boat dive again..

Several members of the Kayuba team went out this past weekend to do a two tank drift dive. It was the first time we went out on a chartered boat in a while. Our first dive was at a spot called the ‘houseboat‘ which is out on the 3rd reef. The current was ripping sooooo strong that it was extremely difficult getting down the tie off line to the houseboat below, not to mention the dozens of jellyfish drifting at you head on… In hindsight, we probably all should have nixed the houseboat and line and just jumped in and drifted immediate while dropping to depth…
The second dive was a much more mild shallow drift for some lobsters.. not many to be found.. IN the end.. still a great trip – nice to get out with fellow Kayubers and do some diving!

Kayuba members, and everyone…
We’ll be doing a Boat dive this coming Sunday (Sept 23rd) aboard the Sea Experience, which goes out of Bahia Mar. 8:30 am show and 9:00 am go. The cost is $55 for a 2-tank dive
Including tax and tip. Let Dick know ASAP so he can reserve your Spot. So far, there’s 8 of us heading out.. Most likely a 60-70 ft Drift first, then a shallow second reef dive. .Dick is at
954-325-2739.

In October, we’ll be planning a West Marine showing to demo/speak about Kayak diving, how-tos, etc.. A couple hours in the morning Saturday the 20th. Again, let Dick know if you might be interested in helping out.

Lastly, also in October, the next weekend (after West Marine), Saturday the 27th, the club will be doing a picnic at John Lloyd..Some will dive, some will just relax.. and there might be a few folks we meet at West Marine the previous week who come out to see what the club is about.. Come on out if you can..

Kayak Against Cancer 2012

Wow.. another successful event is in the books. Full updates to come (money raised, number of paddlers, etc).. but overall a great day.
It was a bit breezy, blowing up 3 to 5′ chop the entire run.. Getting up to Oakland (speaking personally), was tough.. I think for a few others as well.. but getting back was like a speed run with winds at your back.
The after party, as usual was great – lots of great food, drink.. and cool raffles. I can’t believe how much the auctions brought in.. I think $675 for the Guy Harvey picture, about $500 for Heike’s chef/cooking for 40.. wow.

Kayak Diving Buddies

Hello, all. I just recently picked up a Tarpon 140, and am looking for some new kayak diving buddies. This seemed like a logical place to start. I am PADI AOW/EAN certified.

Anyone interested in showing a kayak newbie the ropes? I am in the Pompano Beach/LBTS area.
